5 Ways To Start A Podcast (And Boost It Quickly)

Starting a podcast can be confusing.  I had limited resources and no mentor to assist me when I started in 2011.  I did a lot of things wrong, but somehow I've lasted and this is still fun for me.  My show is steadily evolving and I get new ideas to improve it each and every week.

If you're starting a podcast then please consider all of these things below:

1) Find a platform.  There are a ton of places where you can start your podcast.  Some of them are free and some are not.  Do not be afraid to start with a platform that may charge a monthly fee.  Sometimes you get what you pay for, so keep that in mind.  I really like some of the free platforms, especially Anchor.FM.  But, I also know that there are some paid others that have a ton of features and analytics from Buzzsprout to Libsyn.

2) Decide what your show will be about.  What are you so passionate about that you need to share it with the world?  It doesn't have to be one singular topic, but you do want one singular theme.  You want people to be able to say, "that's the podcast you listen to when you want discuss (insert subject here)" or "hear people discuss (insert topic)".  Once you determine the purpose of your show then find a title that is either relevant or catchy.  If you're lucky then it will be both.

3) Create social media pages for your podcast and/or a website.  Give people somewhere to go if they want to learn more about your new podcast.  Social media will give people a place to interact and drive discussion.  TikTok is hot right now and Instagram gets a lot of traction, too.  Facebook Groups and Fan Pages are pretty easy to create.  You could do all of them.  The FB Fan Pages offer analytics and insight on page traffic, so that's a bonus.  Keep in mind that this means that you need a logo for your podcast and social media listings.  Make sure it's something that catches the eye.  Keep in mind that most people will see your logo as a thumbnail first, so it needs to stand out in a small picture.  A catchy tag line that summarizes the podcast is a nice touch as well.

4) Have at least three podcasts ready to go out of the gate.  If you're going to start your podcast, don't give people just one episode and then make them wait another week or so to get another.  Allow the listeners to binge-listen a few episodes to get hooked first and then make them wait for that next great episode to drop.  In the words of Missy Elliott, "hit 'em with the heeeeeee" and then "hit 'em with the haaaaaaa".  Be sure to keep a consistent release schedule, too.

5) Get your friends/family on board. It's crucial to have their support to start fast out of the gate. Get as many of them as possible (messaging directly is the best way).  If your podcast launches and you can get 100 or more of your friends and family to subscribe on Day One (even if they don't listen), the sheer number of people subscribing on the first day can possibly land you on one of the New Releases/Trending Now charts on Apple or one of the new Spotify charts.  Subscribers are the key to success in the podcasting industry.  Reviews are very overrated and although they are nice, I've seen podcasts with 60 reviews not appear on a chart while another one with 6 reviews was prominently displayed.  Apple, Spotify and the other podcast aggregators only really care if people are subscribing which means that they are coming back for more.

Once you've done all of that then you are ready to launch!

And as a bonus tip: use YouTube and take advantage of the plethora of tutorials they offer!  The more work you put into your podcast prior to launching, the easier your progression will feel.

Good luck!

Q-on-1 w/Cassandra McClure of Clean Beauty Con

She's a titan in the beauty industry with a passion for what she calls "clean beauty".  And now she's a guest on T2Q!

Listen on your favorite podcasting platform here.

Duration: 26 mins.

Entrepreneur is an understatement. Maybe "mega-entrepreneur" is the title we'll go with here.

Cassandra McClure has a passion for delivering "clean" beauty products all over the globe.

She began playing with makeup at an early age and wound up working all over the world as a model and professional makeup artist.  A change in her health in her youth sparked her quest to learn more about and help deliver clean beauty products.

She created the Clean Beauty Conference which was held earlier in 2020.  She created Lash Binder which inspired her to seek ways to get the product to cancer patients who have lost their eye lashes through chemotherapy (free of charge).  Cassandra was also featured in Forbes Magazine as one of the "Four Fearless Female Entrepreneurs Who Are Revolutionizing Clean Beauty".  The accomplishments go on-and-on.  She won't stop until all beauty is clean beauty!

Pick A Bale of (Tom) Cotton

Listen on your favorite podcasting platform here!

If you're not aware of this man, then you should be.  He is not someone I agree with when it comes to the education of kids in America.

Duration: 4 mins.

An Arkansas senator named Tom Cotton said that slavery was a "necessary evil". Well, unlike our American History books, to put things into context, he said that, "As the Founding Fathers said, it was the necessary evil on which the union was built."

Needless to say, that triggered an irate response from a ton of people across social media and on news air waves. Some people feel that putting the 1619 project in schools is needed.  I figured what the heck, I got 4 minutes to rant about it, too!

Q-on-1 w/Author, Enquied Field-Taylor

On this Q-on-1 podcast, I have a discussion with author, Enquied Fields-Taylor.

Listen on your favorite podcasting platform here.

Duration: 14 mins.

We talk about her book, My Ten-Year Life As An Adulterous Woman, and what gave her the inspiration to share such a personal story.

"This book is a story of my life as an adulterer for a decade, even during my own marriage. It speaks about sex, sex, sex, and more sex in the relationship and how I tried to leave on various occasions, only to return every time. Through prayer and fasting, and continued trips to the altar, the Lord delivered me and set me free from this stronghold that plagued my life for so long and blessed me with my own husband.

Let me be an example for you today. Even though I did wrong committing adultery, God eventually blessed me; but I had to be broken first, and I thank God for His Grace and Mercy. Let Him break you today so you can be blessed. I hope and pray that my story has touched your life in some way because that was certainly my intent."

It's an interesting interview about something that so many people in the world go through: being attracted to a married person. Hopefully, this interview will inspire others to read the book and know that it's never too late to grow!

Q-on-1 w/Raphael Tommie of Can You Blame Me??

This interview is real. I can't think of any other way to put it. In fact, let's not call it an interview. This is a conversation between a 40-something and a 30-something discussing views on "Entanglement" and "First Dates".

Listen to the podcast here.

Duration: 44 minutes.

Your boy, Raphael Tommie, host of the podcast, Can You Blame Me?? joined me to discuss the whole Will / Jada / August triangle (that has become an actual song since this recording). Who was at fault here? What if the roles were reversed and Will was in Jada's shoes? Was it a marketing ploy?

We also dive into the discussion of first dates. Men are expected to hold on to one popular "old school tradition" when it comes to dating: paying for the meal. Despite the fact that dating has evolved in so many ways, that one tradition still holds true. But, should a man spend his hard-earned money on someone he doesn't even know likes him or not? Should there be more of a "meet-and-greet" than an actual date?

I chop it up with RT on that and more on this very entertaining Q-on-1 edition of the Talk 2 Q Radio Show!

Podcast: Can You Blame Me??

How Much To Spend On A First Date?

So, this podcast is for the guy who is looking for love, but is going broke in the process. Don't get me wrong. Ladies can possibly benefit from hearing this message, too.

Listen to the podcast here.

Duration: 5 minutes.

As you can see, I had to get back on my soap box again.  Fellas, the old school approach to dating is killing us in a new school society. Women have many reasons for going out on dates these days and until you're assured that their agenda lines up with yours, don't blow your money.

I'm not saying that all women deserve this approach and I lay that out in the podcast. But don't be that guy who drops $150 on a first date for someone who doesn't even "like you like that". Use discernment and don't let some of these women, who mean you no good, run you into the poor house. Save your money for someone who values your time more than they do a good time on a Friday night.

This podcast is from the pages of my blog over at www.ThankQ.me. Every now and then I come across something from the archives that I want to share on the podcast. I've been blogging since 2010 and when I go back and read some of it, I realize that I've evolved a lot over that time. I find myself disagreeing with my younger self's perspective quite often, but I do come across things now and then that still mean the same to me today.

Q-on-1 w/Joe Stuber of Comic Book Central

On this Q-on-1 podcast, I'm joined by Emmy-winning producer and a lifelong comic book fan, Mr. Joe Stuber!

Listen on your favorite podcasting platform here.

Duration: 46 minutes.

This was a very fun interview as it took me back to many moments of my childhood!

His podcast, Comic Book Central is extremely successful and is making a splash in the industry since 2013.

CBC is the show where comic books come to life.  From TV shows to movies to Broadway plays, Joe interviews the people responsible for making those things happen.

From his very first episode with Stan "The Man" Lee to episodes with the likes of Mark Hamill, Joe Morton, or Julie Newmar.  You can find anything related to comics and pop culture in the archives of CBC.

Joe and I take a trip down memory lane to discuss how we spent our childhoods being fascinated by comic books.  We then migrate towards present day to talk about it being a multi-billion dollar industry for movies, TV and video games.

I had a great time doing this episode as it reminded me so much of how my love for comic books sparked the creative side that I have today.

To Wear A Mask Or Not? That Is The Question!

I'm joined on this Q-on-2 podcast by two ladies who have a passion for boosting your immune system.  They discuss the question: "should I wear a mask?"

Listen to the podcast here.

Duration: 28 minutes.

Since the early part of 2020, life has changed as we know it because of COVID-19.  A lot of people can't do the things that they once enjoyed because of quarantine restrictions and/or fear of contracting the coronavirus.

You turn on the TV and you see so many different opinions about ways to combat the virus that you don't know what to believe.  Is staying at home or wearing masks helping or hurting your chances of living a full and healthy life?  Do we have to wear a mask?

I'm joined by Colorado's finest, Tali (former pharmaceutical sales representative) and Dr. Tiffany (healthcare provider) to discuss some of the things about COVID-19 that's not being revealed in mainstream media.  Both of these ladies are passionate about healthcare and have an extensive background in it.

I hope that you enjoy this podcast and that it encourages you to do your own research to find out what works best for you and yours.  I'm a mask wearer and although I may continue to be one, this information definitely gives people a lot to consider.

(I've agreed to not use a photo or full name of the ladies due to the volatile society we live in today that doesn't respect other's opinions.)

Q-on-1 w/JeVaughn Martin, President of iDream Media

I literally cracked up for just about this entire interview.

Listen to the podcast here.

Duration: 29 minutes.

He's the host of a very popular Facebook Live series called "JeVaughn Show" along with many other titles that he holds.  President of iDream Media and JVM Productions.  He does so much that I really don't know what other titles he may hold.  Someone once said he was a "Mayor", but I can't confirm.

We not only discuss the genesis of his show and its purpose, but get into a deep discussion on family dynamics as well.  Despite his humor, there is a serious side to JeVaughn when it comes to his role as a dad.

There's also a brief discussion on the role of a man as a woman's protector and teacher of children.  That's something I'll bring JeVaughn back on to discuss in depth on a future What Men Think series.

It is a very intriguing and entertaining interview and may be the most interesting that I've done in quite some time.

The Generation That Doesn't Want Relationships

Why are we fooling ourselves? A majority of people no longer desire to have the spouse, 3 kids, dog, and a white picket fence any more.

Listen on your favorite podcasting platform here.

Duration: 72 minutes.

Because society no longer glorifies being married. Sure, we like weddings, but marriages? Not so much. I'm not even sure if people even care about being in a relationship these days.

I'm a 70's baby and I think that my generation is the last who really care about being married. A ton of people my age have either tried it or wanted to.

However, these late 30-somethings and younger, I'm not so sure. Do they want "forever, I do" or just an "arrangement" of sorts that has an expiration date? There has to be a reason why modern relationships fall apart so easily today.

I don't think that marriage is important any more in this country, but I'll give all of you an opportunity to convince me otherwise on this edition of the Talk 2 Q Radio Show. "No experts. Just opinions."

Justice For Ebra Hayes

This episode of the Talk 2 Q Radio Show is a bit different than the usual. This episode is about reuniting a family.

Listen on your favorite podcasting platform here.

Duration: 14 minutes.

A 19-year old lady named Ebra Hayes was charged with being complicit to murder back in the mid-90's to what appears to be a wrong place, wrong time situation. After 24 years in prison, why is she still not free? Why did she receive the same penalty as the man who actually committed the murder? What can be done to get an appeal? Those are questions her family has asked for over two decades now.

I don't do much talking on this show. This episode really just allows the family the opportunity to tell Ebra Hayes' side of the story since she is unable to tell it for herself. So, please listen to the Hayes family and find it within your heart to help contribute to their cause to finding Justice for Ebra Hayes.

Daddy's Lil Girl #TBT

Enjoy one of the all-time classics from T2Q!

Listen on your favorite podcasting platform here!

Duration: 18 minutes.

(Show #196 originally aired on February 19, 2013.)

On this TBT edition, I was joined by Buck, Ray, Amanda, and M&M!

In this discussion, we start talking about how dating someone who has family drama can become a permanent part of your life if you decide to marry that person.  Family conflict can and usually will ultimately impact your marriage at some point.

The discussion was going along just fine until M&M did what he does best: took the topic in another direction.  The show turned into the direction of the importance of being a #GirlDad and how that impacts a daughter's outlook on life.  M&M gave his perspective on how women without fathers in their lives are viewed differently, fairly or unfairly, than women who have them.
